July 2019 Dragon Lord Spotlight - Lutrus

War Dragons - July DLS - Lutrus

This July, we’re shining the monthly spotlight on a player known for his mastery with Dragons, who is none other than Dragon Lord Lutrus! Lutrus is an expert flier, member of the Gameplay Faction, and even spares some time to be a Forums Moderator. Read on for flying tips, fun facts, and more about this month’s featured player!

Dragon Lord Spotlight: Lutrus

What is your current level, team, and league?

I’m level 422 on Rulith in Diamond 2.

When did you start playing War Dragons?

Winter of 2016, with Tarand, Tengu, and Algor being the terror of the skies then. I just missed the Skarr + Nightshade Season, so they were also plenty popular.

What initially drew you to War Dragons?

My wife actually was playing War Dragons first, so I wanted to play a game that she was playing. Then, I loved the mechanics and progression of the game (pre-Sapphire Tier) and was smitten.

How did you decide on your In-Game Name? What’s the backstory behind it?

Lutrus is a bastardization (masculine adaptation) of the Latin Lutris/Lutra for Otters. They are cute, deft creatures who help save the environment, so there’s a lot to love.

Who are some of the standout personalities you like to play with and why?

I like analytical personalities like:

  • Red, with her breakdown of breeding paths,

  • Gox, with his breakdown of high-level gameplay and mechanics,

  • Mech, with his spreadsheet information,

  • MBN, from a relatively new player perspective of gameplay and mechanics,

  • Ragnar, for island / Dragon interactions (A lot of people think that Hauheset fliers can only fly Hau, but they don’t realize that Hau teaches so many different flying mechanics and island interactions that it can be applied to any Dragon. Hau is simply the best Dragon for those applications, which is why Hau fliers fly Hau. Weird, right?),

and many, many others, some who I haven’t even spoken to personally, but whose influence has been a part of my gaming experience.

What are some things you wish you knew when first beginning to play War Dragons?

Breeding paths and base theory. I have 7 Ballistas, a Trebuchet, and 3 Lightning Towers in my inventory that are a deep regret.

What dragon are you going to be targeting in the next breeding event?

My main target has been Lusian, and since I’ve acquired him, I’m just coasting until the next Tier hits. I’ll be getting Archon (I believe), as well as some research this breed event.

How did you ascend the ranks to a D2 team? What has that journey been like?

I actually wasn’t a part in the D2 ascending process! When I started, I was on a Bronze team that my wife created. Then we joined a Platinum Team that served us well for awhile. Then we joined a Sapphire 3 team, became an officer on that team, and got us doing really well in PVP events. However, it had some legacy players that were limiting the climbing opportunity of the team, so when I bred Hauheset (hadn’t even learnt how to fly her yet), I applied to Rulith (where most of the Forum greats were congregated) and they accepted me, only to be unrelatedly declared on by 4 teams, plus a 5th guest waving with the other 4! Despite all that, we still beat 2 of the 4 teams.

What do you hope to accomplish with your current team?

World peace.

You’re well known in the Dragons community as one of our most expert flyers, and have been revered as such with your Gameplay Faction involvement! How did you get so good?!

Ragnar. And Healing Potions. But seriously, both. I was an okay flier as it was (I still remember the excitement when I figured out that Hunters could fire more than 1 shot at a time when I was level 63), but seeing Ragnar and Reflast on a forum flying competition opened up my eyes that there was a lot more to learn about this seemingly static base design. Contacting Ragnar opened up a dialogue and friendship that allowed me to learn years of experience in a short amount of time.

What flying tips or advice would you share with aspiring expert flyers to better themselves in battle?

Learn the basics: Each turn has a different speed, different visual points, and different times where damage applies to the towers from the turn. Damage from the turn is going to change flying opportunities for the aspiring flyer. Here’s a clip of the current season stingray doing 3 spells from the turn:

Being a part of the Gameplay Faction, you get a chance to playtest content ahead of release and provide feedback to PG. What has that process been like, and what is your favorite part of that process?

It’s been great. The best part is when an over or underpowered Dragon is balanced, and getting to be a part of that.

You’re also a Forums Moderator on the War Dragons Forums - what has that moderating experience been like for you?

“Moderator brutality!” “Moderator Power trip” “Give me my Rainbow evolution stones!”

Mods certainly experience the ugly side of the forums, but it’s in a effort for the playerbase to participate in the enjoyable side of the platform. It certainly is a plus that there are a good number of mods so we can have an objective, ubiased view when dealing with issues as they arrive.

What have you most enjoyed contributing to the War Dragons Community by being a Forums Moderator?

Helping focus the conversation on actual game issues instead of off-topic conspiracies.

When you’re not playing War Dragons, what do you like to do in your free time?

What is this free time you speak of? Between working, family, studying, running my husky and trying new recipes, there’s not too much else.

If you could create a brand new spell for Dragons of any Class, what would it be and why?

Ha! I don’t have a response for this. I will say that I’ve fantasized about a Red Tier Dragon with an Entrap / Sand Spell, Time Shift, Death Gaze or Crumble to Dust, and Lust, except Time Shift has unlimited rewinds...but again, Red Tier HP.

If people want to connect with you, what is the best way for them to do so?

PM me @Lutrus on the Forums, unless you are ZestyNoob. Then I will ignore you, accidentally.

Lastly…what’s your favorite Festive Dragon, based on looks or power, or both?

I mean, it’s gotta be Axi, right? I actually loved Nydryr until it was given an atrocious spell kit. But seriously, if we could get more neon trim Dragons, I would love it.
