Turn the Tide of Battle with the Summerkai Season

Summerkai Season Announce

Bright days, long nights...must be Summerkai!

The Summer Season is about to get underway! Long days of sunshine (sorry, Australia folks…), crispy, fresh air by the oceans, and cookout gatherings are on the horizon. Coming alongside these summertime festivities is the latest Season in War Dragons!

With the Summerkai Season comes the introduction of the fourth Dragon Class: The Invoker. Namaka is our Mythic Invoker Dragon of the Season, and we’ve got lots of fun opportunities for you to fly her in battle. Learn more about the Invoker Class from the latest announcement!

This week, the Dragons community team will be flying the new Summerkai Dragons and Dragon Rider live on our weekly streams. Catch the show on Twitch this Wednesday (6/5) at 3pm PT and Facebook Live this Thursday (6/6) at 2pm PT.

Summerkai Season Updates

The Summerkai Season will follow the same seasonal structure as the Springblossom Season (detailed in this blog post). This includes:

  • The concept of Season Keys that unlock your choice of either Mythic Dragon, which then cost no additional sigils to obtain both the Dragon and their evolution stones.

  • Seasons Dragon Buffs will be in effect for the Summerkai Season Dragons throughout the duration of the Season, which ends on September 3rd. These buffs include +50% Dragon XP for every battle and -95% Heal Times between flights.

  • All portraits in the Summerkai Season will include a version with their background and a version without, which will both be claimed at the same time for no additional cost!

The Base Boost branch makes a return in the Summerkai Season, as well! This time, the Base Boost will be available at the start of the Season. As before, the boost will be available for about 3 months until September 3rd, the end of the Season. Defense power will return to the intended levels once these 3 months are up. For more details, take a read through this blog post where the branch was first introduced!

Base Boosts cap out at +22% HP and +22% Attack on any base. For those who still have any Springblossom buffs from the Base Boost branch in effect, the Springblossom and Summerkai boosts will total up to this +22%, and will not stack on top of each other. The Springblossom boosts will be in effect until July 3rd, which is when they will expire, and only Summerkai boosts will remain.

Coming Soon: Limited Time Branches

This Summerkai Season, a few new branches will also make their debut in-game. These Limited-Time Branches will focus on a variety of resources and will appear for 1-2 weeks in the Season. After the 1-2 weeks has expired, they will disappear and prizes in these branches cannot be further claimed.

The branches themselves will be much shorter and cost fewer Summerkai Sigils than their Legendary Branch counterparts. They will not have Season Keys at the end of their lines, and they will feature a multitude of items to help you on your Dragons journey! You can expect to see the first of these Limited Time Branches appearing later in the Summerkai Season. More details will be available closer to their launch.

War Dragons - Dreth

Sandskimmer

War Dragons - Dreth

A graceful sand-dwelling dragon, long thought extinct.

Island Nation fishing vessels have been returning from the open ocean with tales of a strange creature. There have been many fantastical accounts, but facts are few and far between. One crew speculated the creature swam out of the Great Trench. Another reported that it could turn invisible. A reputable merchant even claimed that its wingspan was larger than a trading ship from the Great Fleet. The creature has yet to cause any trouble, but that hasn’t stopped the Islanders from becoming fearful. One of the tribes has been gathering sailors for a hunting party, but incurring the wrath of something so mysterious may not be terribly wise...

Dreth Spotlight Video

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TcfAFyuJAG0" width="560"></iframe>

Design Intent and Strategy:

Dreth is a self-sufficient Sorcerer that brings its own damage, disabling, and protection power. Dreth’s main tool for cracking open an island is Whirlpool. Whirlpool temporarily disables any towers hit and, most importantly, disables Red Mage shields. Once the Red Mage tower is disabled, Dreth has a number of options. Dreth can use Sandblast to nuke and freeze the entire island, but damaging the Red Mage tower with Sandblast will remove Whirlpool’s disabling effect, preventing further Sandblast casts. A safer option may be to first destroy the Red Mage tower with Hydrostrike. Doing so opens up safer casts of Sandblast, but exposes Dreth to the island’s defenses for longer. Dreth has Magic Barrier to help compensate for these periods of vulnerability, and activating Magic Barrier at the right time can block incoming Mage Drain supershots as well. This is an important mechanic to master, as Dreth does not easily regenerate Rage.

War Dragons - Scorpa

Font of Venom

War Dragons Summerkai Season - Scorpa

This drake's venom is so caustic, it can burn through solid steel.

The reefs of the Island Nations are fraught with danger. Any wildlife must be constantly vigilant, lest they fall prey to predators like Scorpa. One of the reefs’ more dangerous predators, Scorpa lies in wait, camouflaged in the vivid coral fields that span the ocean floor. Any prey that catches their eye is assaulted by a flurry of poisoned spines. Rather than finishing their catch quickly, Scorpa waits for its deadly toxins to weaken their prey. Scorpa’s hapless victims have no chance of survival once the dragon closes in.

Scorpa Spotlight Video

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CMkyf8xlKmE" width="560"></iframe>

Design Intent and Strategy:

Scorpa relies on its powerful poison to take down towers. When cast, Caustic Spines applies a damage-over-time effect to all nearby towers and causes them to take increased damage from all sources. An ideal opener would be to cast Caustic Spines, use all available Hunter ammo, and then use Enshroud. Scorpa’s poison will still deal damage even when the Dragon is cloaked, allowing Scorpa to regenerate ammo and plan ahead while not missing out on damage output. Bloodfury fuels Scorpa’s frequent casts of Caustic Spines and serves as the Dragon’s primary source of healing. Note that towers destroyed by Scorpa’s poison will still heal Scorpa if Bloodfury is active.

War Dragons - Meglok

The Oceanic Apex

War Dragons - Meglok

A prehistoric beast, and top of the oceanic food chain.

Every household in the Island Nations has heard the tales of Meglok. As an ancient dragon, Meglok has far outlived the inception of the Island Nations, and nothing has managed to match the Dragon in combat. That said, none of the fireside-stories describe Meglok as a menace. Instead, Meglok is often depicted as a guardian or protector. The dragon has always watched over the Island Nations, patrolling the waters for any threats to the region and its inhabitants. However, this behavior is not born from benevolence. Meglok is simply guarding their territory and their subjects. For Meglok is the true ruler of the Island Nations, and they will tolerate no question to their reign.

Meglok Spotlight Video

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Vu6jR0250OA" width="560"></iframe>

Design Intent and Strategy:

Meglok’s power revolves around its two-stage ability: Apex Predator. The spell’s first activation triggers Primordial Breath, a powerful breath modifier that drastically increases Meglok’s flamethrower damage. After casting Primordial Breath, Meglok gains access to Primal Shield. While active, Primal Shield will block a flat amount of damage based on Meglok’s Modified HP. If the shield hasn’t been broken when its duration expires, the shield will explode, massively damaging all towers in range.

The rest of Meglok’s kit is built to synergize and enhance the effectiveness of Apex Predator. When activated, Tangling Kelp instantly freezes all nearby towers and causes them to take increased damage. This allows Meglok to avoid stun, mage drain, and Storm shield effects while also enhancing Primordial Breath’s damage bonus. Furthermore, Tangling Kelp’s freeze ensures that Primal Shield won’t be broken before the explosion triggers. Tangling Kelp also has no cooldown, so the spell can be used in quick succession to burst down an island (Tangling Kelp will enhance the damage of subsequent casts of Tangling Kelp). This will consume most of Meglok’s Rage (and the Dragon does not easily recover its Rage resources), but when an island absolutely has to go down, Meglok has that option.

War Dragons - Namaka

Goddess of the Tides

War Dragons - Namaka

Sea elves live at the whims of the tides, and revere Namaka above all dragons

Namaka is one of the Island Nations’ three Dragon-Goddesses. Alongside her sisters of Nature and Lava, the Islanders pray to their Goddesses for peaceful and prosperous lives. For Namaka, specifically, they pray she keeps the fish plentiful, the tides consistent, and the seas calm. The God-Dragons rarely manifest in physical form, only appearing when they need to work particularly powerful magic, or when there is a momentous occasion, such as the coronation of a new ruler.

Namaka Spotlight Video

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/d5U_4LBE-BE" width="560"></iframe>

Design Intent and Strategy:

Namaka is the first Dragon of the Invoker Class. Invokers combine the precision attacks of Hunters with the area-of-effect burst and protection spells of Sorcerers. Namaka’s kit revolves around frequently using the fourth-shot bonus from her breath attack, which freezes towers and deals bonus damage in an area of effect. A powerful opener is to use your first salvo, focusing down any Red Mage and Storm Towers, then quickly use Deflecting Gale to instantly recover Invoker ammo and freeze the other towers. With your breath attack on cooldown, Cresting Wave can easily pick off any remaining towers.

Namaka is most vulnerable when out of ammo, so make sure you either have Deflecting Gale or Cresting Wave available to cast while recharging. Don’t be afraid to use your ammo on one or two towers, however. Namaka’s freeze effect prevents towers from attacking for a good chunk of the reload time. Alternating that with Deflecting Gale, Namaka fliers can either prevent or dodge a significant portion of incoming damage.

Test Fly the Invoker Dragon

War Dragons - Invoker Test Flying

We realize that a Mythic Divine Dragon won’t be the easiest to obtain the first day it’s available. For that reason, we’ve given Ryuu the Shrine Dragon a brief vacation at the start of the upcoming Summer Season so players have a chance to fly Namaka!

To activate this flight with Namaka, players will need to successfully defend 5 times in-game and the Dragon will automatically be added to the active roster for one run. Once the run is complete, the Dragon will be removed from the roster, exactly the same as Ryuu. Defend another 5 times and Namaka will unlock once again!

Take flight with Namaka beginning at the start of the Summer Season on June 5th until June 11th and from June 19th to the 25th. You’ll have two weeks to fly Namaka with one week in between that Ryuu will be back. This is to ensure that the first Invoker Dragon won’t turn the tide for any Wars happening during the second week of the Summer Season. Any defenses that unlock the Shrine Dragon within the two active weeks will summon Namaka until Ryuu returns from their beachfront cabana as the Shrine’s permanent Dragon companion on June 26th.
