What is your current level, team, and league?

Level 352, Rulith, Diamond II.

When did you start playing War Dragons?

Late January of 2017.

How did you discover War Dragons?

It kept popping up in some other game I was messing around with at the time, after the 3rd or 4th time I decided to give it a try.

Out of all the various things to do in the game, such as collecting dragons, building up a powerful base, forming powerful guilds, ect., what is your favorite aspect and why?

It’s definitely the team aspect of the game. I’ve made honest-to-goodness friends in this game, and over the course of my life, I can count the number of games that has happened in on one hand.

How did you decide on your In-Game Name? What’s the backstory behind it?

I was on a different team awhile back and one of the members thought it’d be fun for everyone to change their name to a Greek or Roman god… mine stuck and I never changed it back.

You’re well known in the community for being a part of the Creators Faction and making awesome poster art for weekly events in addition to Dragons Trading Cards. Where do you find your inspiration for your work?

I had been doing the “Woe Dragons” comics for so long to do the announcements, and once I did a spoof of The Notebook for a breeding event. It was really cartoony and quick, but it got me thinking, so a few months later I had an idea to do an Avengers: Infinity War parody for Team Gauntlet, I had so much fun that shortly after that I made it a weekly thing.

It’s clear you’re a seasoned artist outside of the CF, as well! How did you learn the beginnings of digital painting?

Prior to getting my teaching degree, I went to art school and studied traditional art (oils, pastels, etc.). After that, I decided that I wanted to learn Photoshop (oil paints and canvas gets expensive!) so I got myself a mid-level drawing tablet and started teaching myself. It actually is neat how traditional techniques can be applied to digital media. Since then, I’ve invested in a much better display tablet and a better PC, and have definitely honed my skills a lot.

What have been some of your favorite Dragons or other works to paint?

Pathox, and the concept I did for Dread’s Atlas portrait are my favorite fantasy style pieces. The digital painting I did of my wife and daughter for a Christmas present is my favorite non-fantasy digital piece that I have done.

What advice do you have for artists who are interested in starting to paint digitally?

Most already will be, but get good with physical media first. Work with paints or pastels to learn how colors blend and how to make realistic shading, highlights, etc. Also, if you wish you had a brush for something in particular in Photoshop, make sure Google it, since it likely exists somewhere.

You recently attended the War Dragons Summit, a special event with the Dragons team where attendees could discuss all things War Dragons. What was your experience like attending the Summit?

It was really great to see fellow players, some teammates, and a handful of players from other teams as well. This was my second year there and it was a lot more player focused than the Atlas Party was. There were a ton of great ideas that attendees got to share, a lot of which I hope to see implemented in some fashion in the future.

What was your favorite thing you got to experience at the Summit, or members of the Dragons team you had a chance to chat with?

That’s a tough call…the art presentation is a given. You guys have some talented people working for you! The “Design a Dragon” presentation was a lot of fun, as well.

Let’s chat a bit about your in-game experience! What have been some of your favorite moments in War Dragons so far?

I wish I could remember who the team we were warring was, but there was a war that literally came down to the last seconds. We won, but it was a nail biter that could have easily gone either way. It was one of those wars where even if we had lost, we would’ve been ok with it because it was THAT good of a war.

Since you’ve been with the game for so long, it’s no surprise that you know the ins and outs of almost everything about it! What is the best piece of advice you can offer to newer War Dragons players?

I don’t know about all the ins and outs, but I’d recommend two big things:

  • Follow a breeding path (I’m biased towards Red’s because it really is the best out there, but anything is better than playing Pokémon with your Dragons)

  • Build strong, not long (keep a shorter base with maxed towers, and NEVER a ballista)

Who are some of the standout personalities you like to play with and why?
My entire team, that’s a given…Red, Mech, Lutrus, ForSci…I’d name them all, but I’m already long winded. Outside of Rulith, my fellow Gameplay Faction / Creators Faction members are awesome folks. Other than that, my last team, VaIarMorghuIis, have some great people that I still talk to on the phone weekly.

When you’re not playing War Dragons, what else do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy staying active, doing a variety of different things for exercise and stress relief. I have two girls (22 and 8) with a boy coming in June. The 8 year old is like a mini-me, so we spend a lot of time watching superhero shows and movies, enjoying anything Star Wars-related, and playing video games. I think being a dad is my favorite thing of all.

If people want to connect with you, what is the best way for them to do so?

Twitter (@PQHiggins) is the easiest way, and I even respond to DMs if they aren’t too weird. (I’ve gotten a few wack-a-doos over the years!)

If you could pick a theme for new dragons, what would it be and why?

I’d pick “Famous Dragons” as in mythologically speaking. Most older cultures have mythology including a dragon in it… Yamata no Orichi, Fucanglong (yes, I am acutely aware of how this sounds…), Zmey Gorynuch, Jawzhar, Kur, to name a few. Barring something like that, doing another cultural type theme like Asian Dragons could be fun, especially if they could theme a base for that…although given the Twitch Draws a Rider survey, it sounds like that might be happening in some form next season!

Lastly…What is the ideal design of an original Dragon that you can think of? The sky’s the limit!

We’ve had enough pretty…I want scary again, so I took some inspiration from Stranger Things and created a Demodragon…make it happen!
